FAQ
Each pick is selected by the Quant Team’s data-driven approach, developed by Steven Cress, without subjectivity or emotion. Instead, each selection relies on analyzing terabytes of data and employs best-in-class optimization and risk tools that will help improve portfolio performance.
Alpha Picks considers company fundamentals, valuation, momentum, forward-looking analyst estimates, and profitability. Stocks with upward momentum tend to outperform over more extended periods.
When a stock no longer scores well on fundamentals, valuation, and momentum (relative to the sector), or if a stock is rated as ‘Hold’ for more than 180 days, it becomes a ‘Sell’ and is removed from the portfolio.
Alpha Picks is designed for buy-and-hold investors looking for capital appreciation.
Alpha Picks does not require frequent trading. The Alpha Picks portfolio is not specifically designed to generate dividend income.
Alpha Picks covers multiple sectors and is not designed for single-sector investors. This is because the best opportunities rotate between different sectors. For example, the portfolio added a homebuilder stock in March 2023, which appreciated 100% in the following quarter.
We aim for the Alpha Picks’ overall portfolio performance to outperform the market significantly over a long period of time. (So far, it’s done just that.)
We expect some picks to outperform the market massively and some to underperform. Winners dominate the performance of the portfolio as their positions become more significant.
Alpha Picks should be evaluated based on the entire portfolio's performance rather than single picks.
It's okay if picks are clustered in a single sector for a while, like tech or energy. It could mean this sector is experiencing the most significant improvement in fundamentals.
Our quantitative analysis team, led by Steven Cress, selects the picks.
Steve has over 30 years of experience in equity research, quantitative strategies, and risk management. He founded the quant hedge fund Cress Capital Management after running a trading desk at Morgan Stanley.
The stock selection methodology is based on rigorous backtesting of fundamental investment metrics and a proven stock selection strategy designed for Seeking Alpha.
Seeking Alpha's 'Strong Buy' quant ratings result from powerful computer processing and our expert 'Quantamental' analysis.
From nearly all U.S. equities, our quantitative algorithm selects stocks with the strongest collective value, growth, profitability, EPS revisions, and price momentum metrics vs. sector peers. These attributes are assigned grades that are then weighted to maximize predictive value. The best stocks are awarded a 'Strong Buy' rating.
Over the last 12 years, the backtested strategy has delivered impressive returns, beating the S&P 500 yearly. For information on Quant Ratings and our backtest calculation, click here. What's more, if we look at the performance since inception (December 2009 onwards), our 'Strong Buy' stock picks have delivered a staggering return, as you can see above.
